A road is a drainage structure that you happen to drive on. What keeps a private road sound is water staying out of the base — far more than the depth of the surface.
We build driveways and smaller private roads: the drive into a house lot, a shared way serving a few properties, a track to a barn or a woodlot. Subdivision roads built to town acceptance standards are a different scale of job, and not one we take on.

What makes a road last
Three things: a crown that sheds water, ditches that carry it away, and a base sized for what drives on it. That last one is worth thinking about early — a drive that will see a concrete truck or a loaded log truck needs more base than one that will see cars, and it is far cheaper to build for the heaviest load at the start.
